YA Fest: Favorite YA authors?
Cyn Balog: Too many to name!

YA Fest:How/why did you start writing?
Cyn: I wrote my first book right after I learned how to read, because I assumed that was the natural progression– you learn to read books, then you write them. It never occurred to me that it was something most people didn’t do!

YA Fest: One piece of advice for young writers?
Cyn: Never give up. Talent is nice to have, but most successful authors are just incredibly persistent and ignore the negatives. Yes, becoming a successfully published author isn’t easy, but if it was, everyone would do it.

YA Fest: What are you currently working on?  (Give us your elevator pitch!)
Cyn:It’s a contemporary YA novel about a girl who starts to question everything she thought she knew about her boyfriend when she discovers a mysterious photograph among his things a year after his suicide.

YA Fest: Are your characters/stories inspired by real people/events?
Cyn: My characters are usually amalgams of several people I know, and bits of my stories may have been extracted from real life. While I’ve never had a fairy boyfriend or been able to predict the future, some of the more mundane events in my books– for example, having a first job in a bakery, crabbing on the Jersey Shore– are ones that I’ve experienced myself.
