YA Fest: Favorite YA books from the past year (2014/2015)?

Lisa Colozza Cocca: Another favorites question and another non-answer! There are just so many good ones out there and favoring one title might be slighting an equally great title.

YA Fest: How/why did you start writing?

Lisa: Between raising children and working as a teacher and as a school librarian, I was lucky enough to read truckloads of great books written for children and young adults. I also had the opportunity to see how books affect readers and how they connect readers. Seeing these connections made me want to write. Even though I hadn’t written anything since college, I sat down and gave it a try.

YA Fest: One piece of advice for young writers?

Lisa: Thomas Edison said “genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration.” I think the same is true of writing. Don’t stop when it gets hard; work your way through it.

YA Fest: What are you currently working on?  (Give us your elevator pitch!)
Lisa: Can you ever be too happy? Yes, you can be.

YA Fest: Are your characters/stories inspired by real people/events?

Lisa: The seedling for the plot to PROVIDENCE was a story on the evening news about a girl who found an abandoned baby. The story for a manuscript we’re shopping now came to me in my sleep. The main characters in my current WIP are loosely based on a couple of girls I met while doing school visits. The one thing all three have in common is that once they got into my head they wouldn’t leave until I wrote them down!
