YA Fest: Favorite YA authors? Illustrators you admire?
Jen McConnel: So many! I adore Jennifer L. Armentrout, Kiera Cass, and, always, Judy Blume.

YA Fest: Favorite YA books from the past year (2014/2015)?
Jen: There have been so many great titles, but I recently finished The Wrath and the Dawn and The Red Queen, both of which I devoured.

YA Fest: How/why did you start writing?
Jen: I started writing because I’ve always loved reading, and I realized that I wanted to do more than just fall into stories and worlds that other people had created: I wanted to become one of the creators!

YA Fest: One piece of advice for young writers?
Jen: Have fun and take risks! As long as you love the process, as long as writing feels more like play than work (most of the time), you’re doing everything right.

YA Fest: What are you currently working on?  (Give us your elevator pitch!)
Jen: I’m working on the final installment of the Red Magic series: Darlena may have regained her grasp of Red Magic, but she’s starting to wonder if the price is too high. It’s so much fun (and also a bit bittersweet) to be wrapping up this trilogy: I ❤ these characters so much!

YA Fest: Are your characters/stories inspired by real people/events?
Jen: I like to say that each of my books is like a horcrux, with bits and pieces of my soul contained within the pages, but I’ve never based a character or event directly off of anyone I know or anything that’s ever happened. I’m more of a magpie, borrowing a sensation here, an emotion there, a character trait here, a personality clash there. My characters and stories are entirely their own creations, however, and my husband is used to me talking about them as tangibly as I discuss my “real” friends and experiences. For me (and hopefully for my readers) my characters ARE real.
