Get to know more of the wonderful authors that are going to be signing at YA Fest in October 2015.
Author of Breaking Glass, Vision, and Until Beth.
YA Fest: Favorite YA authors? Illustrators you admire?
Lisa Amowitz: I’m a huge fan of Maggie Stieffvater, Victoria Schwab, Libba Bray, Alexandra Bracken, Scott Westerfeld, and of course our esteemed hostess Jennifer Murgia!
YA Fest: Favorite YA books from the past year (2014/2015)?
Lisa: I loved Libba Bray’s The Diviners—dying for the next installment
YA Fest: How/why did you start writing?
Lisa: I’m an artist and illustrator—I originally wanted to write a book so I could illustrate it. Sadly, instead of a picture book, I realized i was writing something way darker, for an older audience. I became obsessed with writing for writing’s sake and have not stopped since. That was eleven years ago.
YA Fest: One piece of advice for young writers?
Lisa: Read in your genre. A lot. Join SCBWI and find a critique group. Develop a very thick skin. Perfect your craft before you try to query agents/publishers. Don’t give up. Ever. But do constantly strive to improve yourself. Never stop doing that.
YA Fest: What are you currently working on? (Give us your elevator pitch!)
Lisa: Young science scholar Rosalie Gates defies her mother’s wishes and visits her estranged dad on a mysterious haunted island that turns her logical safe world, and her heart, upside down. Very loosely based on the Secret Garden.
Are your characters/stories inspired by real people/events? Mostly not, but sometimes events spark or enhance an idea. One exception is the villain in one of my four books ( I shall not give any clues) who is very consciously based on someone who is not on my A list. 🙂
