YA Fest: How/Why did you start writing?
Molly Cochran: I decided that I wanted to become a writer at age 12, after I read the diary that Anne Frank kept during her years of hiding from the Nazis. She was finally caught and killed, like so many others, just because she was Jewish. But her diary speaks to the artist in all of us.

YA Fest: One piece of advice for young writers?
Molly: Write every day. Even if it’s just a paragraph, or even a sentence, it will get you into the habit of writing. Not developing this habit is the main reason why talented writers fall short of becoming professional writers.

YA Fest: What are you currently working on?
Molly: I’m writing a book about Japan between 1912 and 1945, a little-known period that nevertheless brought tremendous changes to that country and propelled Japan into the modern world.

YA Fest: Are your characters/story inspired by real events?
Molly: Yes, in the case of my Japanese book. I based it on the life of my grandfather, whose life was dedicated to the women in it: His mother, grandmother, three wives, and four daughters, all of whom guided him from his privileged youth through the horrors of World War II.
