YA Fest: Favorite YA authors?
Kieran Scott: I have MANY favorites, so I’ll just list a few here. Alexandra Bracken, Elizabeth Eulberg, Elizabeth Wein, Jennifer E. Smith, Jen Calonita, Jennifer Lynn Barnes, Stephanie Kate Strohm, Megan McCafferty, Kate Brian . . . just kidding. No, but she’s great. 🙂
YA Fest: Favorite YA books from the past year?
Kieran: Open Road Summer by Emery Lord, Like No Other by Una Lamarche, Bright Before Sunrise by Tiffany Schmidt (Can you tell I have a thing for romance?)
YA Fest: How/why did you start writing?
Kieran: I started writing short YA romance stories in high school because the boy I liked didn’t like me back, so I wrote a version of how our romance would go if he noticed I existed. It’s very bad, but it got me hooked on writing.
YA Fest: One piece of advice for young writers?
Kieran: It doesn’t matter if it’s bad (see above), just keep writing, keep practicing, and you WILL get better. Also read. A lot. And many different kinds of things–even if they’re things you think you won’t like. You never know which writers will help you find your true voice.
YA Fest: What are you currently working on?
Kieran: My current labor of love is a book about a girl who’s the daughter of professional assassins–both of whom go missing–and a year later all these hitmen come after her looking for them, so she goes on the run cross country with her boyfriend, escaping the bad guys and trying to figure out what the heck is going on.
YA Fest: Are your characters/stories inspired by real people/events?
Kieran: I got the idea for the idea above from a dream I had about Chris Hemsworth in which I was his girlfriend and he told me I couldn’t tell anyone, because if they knew we were in a relationship I’d be in danger. Does that count?
